This piece more than others has a religious feeling because it has several cross images. I use this imagery because they are shorthand and powerful Jungian icons for expressing spirituality. Serenity was also an exploration in repetition of form. Notice that the chess like pieces at the outside borders are essentially the same shape whether in the positive (black) or the negative (white). These types of forms fascinate me and drive me to solve their visual riddle. MC Escher and Moorish tiles are a huge inspiration here.
